The septet is a showcase for the multi-Juno Award-winning saxophonist’s compositional and arranging skills and features some of the most dynamic improvisers on the Toronto jazz scene. The arrangements strive to maintain the open concept of a smaller jazz ensemble and are constructed around a buoyant rhythm section that can take the music in any direction. Rooted in the jazz tradition but not constrained by it, the septet’s music reflects the strong yet lyrical musical personality for which Murley has become known over the past three decades.
The group debuted in April 2005 at the Top of the Senator jazz club and since then have continued to perform in and around the Toronto area. The release of Still Rollin’ was celebrated with a performance at The Rex Jazz Bar in January 2011 followed by performances at the Toronto and Prince Edward County Jazz Festivals. The septet also opened the new “Jazz Room” in Waterloo ON in September 2011.
The Mike Murley Septet toured Atlantic Canada in July and October 2013 through the generous assistance of a touring grant from the Canada Council. They made their debut at Jazz Bistro in Toronto in May 2014.
